Our Squads

    General Squad Details

    The Wanganui Swimming Club provides coaching services to members who wish to develop their competitive swimming. There are three squads:

    Fundamental
    Development
    Seniors
    Fundamental Squad
    This is the most junior squad. Swimmers progress to here generally from the 6.00pm Club coaching sessions, which gently prepares swimmers for the more rigorous training. Swimmers attend three pool training sessions in the afternoon or early evening. The focus of this squad is a transition into Squad training routines, along with some stroke correction and building of fitness levels. Swimmers are generally between 10 - 13 years of age.

    This Squad is designed to provide swimmers with the primary skills necessary to become a solid all round competitive swimmer. Technique, starts, turns and basic training are all the focus of the Fundamental squad. Swimmers are encouraged to compete in all competitions unless advised otherwise by the coach. Individual progress is the basis for achievement at this level.

    Fundamental Level Training requirements:

    Swimmers must possess the ability to swim all four competitive strokes.
    Swimmers must be able to complete 6 x 100 freestyle at a 2:15 interval and 8 x 50 form stroke at a 1:30 interval.
    Swimmers must attend 75% of training sessions in order to move up to the next level.
    Swimmers wishing to advance to a higher level must meet all training requirements. Factors such as team size may influence the placement of swimmers. The training requirements are the minimum requirements. All finals on advancement and team placement are to be determined by the Club Coach.

    Development Squad
    This is the intermediate squad. Swimmers pool train 4 times a week. There is one early morning (6.00am) session a week. Swimmers are expected to compete in a range of local and regional swim competitions. Swimmers are generally between 10 - 14 years of age. The focus is on providing swimmers with the necessary skills and conditioning in order to advance to Senior squad. The goal of this program is to offer high quality instruction and coaching to swimmers in order to improve technique and fitness for all 4 strokes. The basis for achievement at this level is individual level progress. Swimmers are encouraged to continually strive to surpass their own times and accomplishments and compete in all competitions in the team calendar, both in and out of town.

    Development Level Training requirements:

    Swimmers must possess the ability to swim all four strokes competitively.
    Swimmers must be able to compete 10 x 100 freestyle at a 2:00 interval and 10 x 50 form stroke at 1:15 interval.
    Swimmers must attend 80% of training sessions to be eligible to move up to the next level.
    Senior Squads
    The Senior squad trains 6 sessions per week, these are mostly early morning sessions (5.45am or 6.00am starts). This includes 6 pool sessions and dryland sessions for some swimmers. The purpose is to provide a quality program for swimmers wishing to explore the limits of their swimming ability. Swimmers begin to train for specific events at this level. Swimmers are encouraged to compete for the team at all designated meets, but goals are based on the needs of the individual athlete.

    Swimmers generally need to have completed two years in the Development squad prior to moving up to Seniors. Senior swimmer are generally between 13 - 18 years of age.

    Senior Level Training requirements:

    Swimmers must possess the ability to swim all four strokes competitively.
    Swimmers must be able to compete 12 x 100 freestyle at a 1:35 interval and 8 x 100 form stroke at a 1:50 interval.
    Swimmers must attend 80% of monthly training sessions.
